All About Subliminal Perception

Most people have heard of subliminal messages that are often found in advertising and music. But what is it really, and does it really exist? It has been spoken about for years, and was brought to the attention of the public in 1957 during a widely publicized and controversial experiment. Many still believe that it is just a myth. However, subliminal perception is an actual psychological term that doctors and experts have studied for years.

What is Subliminal Perception?

Subliminal perception is a concept that is related to our subconscious minds. Dr Jonathan Parker explains that it is how humans react to a stimulus when this stimulus is below the levels of awareness or consciousness. We are not aware of the message, but it is there and our brains pick up on it nonetheless. Being perceptive to influences in our immediate surroundings is normal human behavior, but the only difference with the subliminal part, is that we do not realize we are reacting to it. We are unaware of being influenced. This can be extremely useful when it comes to subliminal advertising and many marketing experts use subliminal audio and subliminal video to encourage and influence buyers.

How Does it Work?

Most subliminal advertising messages consist of an image or text that is flashed very quickly during the frames of an advert or movie, which then affects your brain without you even realizing it. According to a market researcher in 1957, James Vicary, even a simple image works. What he did was conduct a research experiment during the screening of a movie, Picnic. The subliminal images and message stated, “Thirsty? Drink Coca Cola. Hungry? Eat popcorn.” This message was flashed on the screen for a fraction of a second, so that to the naked eye, it would not have even been visible, however, it was noted that there was a huge increase in the sales of popcorn and Coca Cola, indicating the success of subliminal advertising.

Subliminal Advertising Scientific Evidence on Behavior

According to a psychologist at London’s University College, subliminal perception is a way of bypassing conscious thinking where a person has no intention of resisting. His more than 748 research studies showed that subliminal perception caused the subjects to have no control over their behavior, as it was not conscious and therefore, they could not resist the behavior. He called this “Pre-conscious Processing.”
Furthermore, his studies into the research conducted by Zuckerman in 1960, showed that people could not control their behavior as long as the messages received were subliminal. This was done by observing test subjects who were asked to write stories using thematic apperception cards. Superimposed ambiguously on the cards, were two messages. One told the subjects to write more and the other told them not to write. These instructions had the desired effect as long as they were subliminal. However, once the subjects were aware of the messages, it was no longer consistent, as people could ultimate make the choice to follow or not to follow.

Reducing Crime using Subliminal Music

Many instances of successful subliminal messages in music have been recorded, where department stores have even used this to prevent shoplifting. Over 50 stores across Canada and the United States used subliminal perception tactics to reduce crime in their stores by playing music that contained the message to not shoplift. Statics showed that in one store over a 9 month period, crime was down by 37%. In another supermarket, the reduction in stolen products was enormous, going from $50,000 worth of stock to less than $13,000. It was reported that cashier shortages also dropped. The subliminal statements that were found to be the most effective went along the lines of, “I am an honest person and I will not steal.”

Subliminal Perception Reducing Medical Problems

Various behavioral studies have been conducted around subliminal perception in the medical field, where it has been found that subliminal music, subliminal videos and other forms of subliminal messages have been successful in reducing smoking, fainting, and even loss of temper.

The Tulane University staff started investigating this in 1951 and one investigation proved that stress could be reduced using subliminal music played over the sound system in McDonagh Medical Center. Over 7 months, it was shown that fainting in patients due to needle pain dropped to almost zero, staff smoking dropped by almost 79%, and the anxiety and temper flare ups usually experienced in the crowded waiting rooms dropped by as much as 60%. The levels returned to normal as soon as the subliminal messages were stopped.

Losing Weight with Subliminal Messages

Dr Becker of Tulane University also showed how effective subliminal perception could be in weight loss. At his weight loss clinic in Louisiana, subliminal videos and subliminal audio recordings were used to help modify eating behavior and stick to a diet plan. All the patients lost weight with one woman losing over 100 Pounds in a year. In the follow up study, half of the patients had managed to maintain half of their weight loss goals for up to 2 years after receiving the subliminal treatment. 23% had managed to maintain all or most of their weight loss.
In another weight loss study conducted by 4 doctors, traditional diet therapy was enhanced by subliminal perception. Half the group received positive affirmations, and the other half received neutral subliminal stimulation. In both of these experiments, those who received the subliminal messages had better weight loss, and those who received the positive affirmations managed to continue their weight loss after the conclusion of the experiment.

Subliminal Perception Proof

Yet another experiment conducted by Dr Becker yielded positive results for the proof of subliminal messaging. Two groups of people, namely separated into the control group and the experimental group, were asked to guess a 3 digit number. In the experimental group, they received the number subliminally in what is known as pink noise (hissing sounds). Over a course of 3 separate experiments, 77% of the group guessed correctly. The control group who did not receive the number only had 10% guess correctly. This proves that subliminal perception is real and confirms that people do perceive the messages sub-consciously.
